Eric Dane Opens Up About His Departure from Grey’s Anatomy

Eric Dane, known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on “Grey’s Anatomy,” recently revealed that he believes he was let go from the show. In an interview on Dax Shepard’s podcast, Dane admitted that he was struggling with drug and alcohol addiction towards the end of his time on the series. While he acknowledged that his addiction issues did not directly lead to his departure, he believes it played a role in the decision.

Despite his personal struggles, Dane clarified that he thinks his exit from “Grey’s Anatomy” was primarily due to financial reasons. As the show progressed and actors became more expensive for the network, he understood that his role on the series was no longer financially viable. He expressed his understanding of the network’s decision to let him go and praised the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, for her support throughout the process.

Dane shared that he had been sober for several years before joining the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy,” but unfortunately, he relapsed during the 2007 Writers Guild of America Strike. Reflecting on his time on the show, Dane admitted that he spent more time struggling with addiction than being sober, which eventually led to complications in his personal life and work.

In a plot twist, Dane’s character, Dr. Mark Sloan, met his demise as a result of a plane crash featured in the Season 8 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy.” While he initially survived the crash, his character ultimately passed away in Season 9. Despite his character’s tragic ending, Dane made a guest appearance in Season 17 alongside Chyler Leigh, who played his onscreen love interest, Lexie Grey. Sadly, Leigh’s character also perished in the same plane crash.

Eric Dane’s departure from “Grey’s Anatomy” was a complex mix of personal struggles, financial considerations, and creative decisions. While he accepted the circumstances surrounding his exit from the show, Dane’s honesty about his battles with addiction sheds light on the challenges faced by actors in the entertainment industry.
